Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

As you can see from above the conventions of film openings, title sequences and evidence of our film relating to other teen movies in a variety of ways. Firstly I believe we have followed many conventions in the opening of our teen film Candi Club as we would have liked. Our opening was based on typical teen film stereotypes which was a success and very clear to see.

The title sequence of Candi Club:

Breakfast Club had a similar title sequence when compared to ours:

Secondly the title sequence is in a strict order is very important. The opening credits are first about the most important actors in the film ahead of the production, distribution companies and title. The reason is because if they are well known actors with high reputation the audience will be mainly coming to see them due to the success they brought to the film industry. The title comes after the production and distribution companies who are the films ident.

Candi Club & Breakfast Club Camera Shots and Mise-en-scene by Slidely Slideshow

Finally the slidely above is displaying the different camera shots and mise-en-scene which we used that are similar to other teen movies in this case we compared it to Breakfast Club which was very similar to our opening indeed. It is clear that we had a lot in common and similarities from shot types to mise-en-scene. For example in the geek scene I am traveling to college by bus which is a form of transport whereas in the Breakfast Club the geek is traveling in a car. Also we used a lot of medium close ups when viewing the characters face which were also used in Breakfast Club.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation defines how a character is created through most of the elements of Mise-en-scene. The main are costume, dialog, setting and body language/expressions. The character can also be created through the use of different shot types. Representation mainly exposes stereotypical characters of a particular group or individual dominance. This could include highly rich taste in clothes which a girl/boy would wear in contrast to plain, simple dark coloured clothes a geek or an outsider would wear. This will simply remind the audience that this is a teen movie full of stereotypes in the vision of the main directors and producers.

The teen social groups that we have represented in out film opening are geek, popular girl and the athlete/jogger. All of these characters were stereotypical and expected in a teen film as well as involved in a stereotypical situations. For example we showed for the geek how clever but clumsy and vulnerable he was, for the popular girl, how beautiful, glamorous and self-dominant she was, and for the athlete/jogger how sporty and active, strong and physical and denominate he was as well. This was all represented to the audience clearly through the use of camera, mise-en-scene, editing and sound.

In our opening we introduced the characters with stereotypes how you would see them in a normal teen film which would cause the audience to see them negative and positive e.g. the geek was a positive aspect but as all characters are over exaggerated, the popular girl was seen as in between as you could make a lot of assumptions about here without an actual insight of her characteristics which would be able to judge further into the film and the jogger with a slightly similar situation but overall seen from a positive aspect. However the near the ending of the opening scene is when the audience will realise what it is about and can see our film from a positive aspect as it indicated three nearly completely different and unique people being friends out of the ordinary which is not expected or normal in a teen film.
Class & Teacher Feedback

In summary the feedback which we received was critical but in terms of how well our opening was and we received a lot of positive comments but there were a little tweaks and parts which needed improvement maybe which was brought up when the question was “how could we improve our film opening?”. We realised that our film came out near perfection and more than what we expected it to. According to the feedback we could evaluate ourselves and see how much positive progress we have made as well as if there are any thing we needed to improve on for the present and future.

Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Media production & distribution company from ShahIqram

Production Company

 Distribution Company

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for teen movies in general vary depending on the sub genres of the movies. For example if its romance, love, drama and fantasy sub-genre it will be a film mainly for females or for ages of 14-18 and young adults. Another example is if it is an action, horror, thriller and sci-fi film it is targeted towards males or ages between 13-17 and young adults. Furthermore even elderly people watch teen movies as it reminds them of the past when they were at that age at the time and therefore can relate. The main genre of our movie is comedy, drama and adventure.  The audience for our teen movie is 13-19 and the elderly people.

Our unique selling point is the group hug near at the end of our opening. This is because we have three stereotypical characters which in normal teen movies are never friends or make minimised communication with each other much but in our opening they are all close friends which is a big contrast and is very unique. This kind of variation of group of friends can relate globally to both male and female to suggest stereotypes are over exaggerated and that you shouldn’t judge a person by his or her representation until you make communication with each other. We are sure this will appeal to young teenagers as some of them have gone through existing stereotypes which are not exaggerated and presumably majority have not. But this is also to be seen as entertainment and having a laugh as it not for real life situations.

We made an Instagram account which was our social media network. The account named was group 36 which we kept followers updated with the progress of our film. This would attract our desired target audience and therefore increase the amount of followers we had to see our film. We posted a variety of things such as posters, ruff cut, final cut, film, and progress etc. With the followers we could get valuable feedback and ideas during the process of making the final film opening to make it very good as well as feedback after we post the final film opening.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

I made two poster for our groupsd film, one for advertisinhg and one for marketing

I created two posters for our film featuring Shah Iqram, Arowolo Ololade and Liban Abdulahi for Advertising and Marketing purposes. The posters were developed to promote our film on a physical platform instead of digital by putting up posters on cinema entrances, sides of busses and angel station side boards of the escalator. As we know that a lot of students are traveling to college by train and bus these were one of the two most effective and efficient places to put up the posters as well as the cinema on the main road which people walk past by.

Rough Cut

I think our film opening appeals directly to the audience through Mise-en-scene, Actors, Storyline, Genre, Location, sound and Company. The main characters in the scene were the Geek (Shah) who is dressed smartly with glasses, under shirt and backpack, Popular Girl (Ololade) who is dressed very fashionably, high heels and hand bag and the Athlete/jogger (Liban) who is dressed in sports clothes, side bag and trainers. The main actors are also teenagers which makes them relatable with the audience having a great understanding of the film and connection with the actors of the film.

The genre of our film id comedy, drama and adventure which means throughout the scenes the audience will be analysing what is happening and how all of these completely different unique people became friends as the storyline which makes it more interesting and mysteriously shocking. These genres are typical in a teen film except or less likely adventure which is good. The various locations are recognisable for students who go to college from home or in the area of the college. The sound goes in perfectly as it gives away characteristics of each character as well as the stereotypes for which it changes for each character giving clear indication to the audiences the key differences.

Teacher Feedback For Rough Cut

Once we had finished creating our rough cut we asked our teacher marry to watch the video and give us feedback. The feedback we recieved was very positive and delightful although there were a few teaks we needed to make as well as one or two major tweaks which was very useful for us to make our teen film openning as good as possible for the final cut. The prolems were that we had some fast paced and slow paced scenes in our rough cut which completely took out the consistency and flow in the video as well as that we had toomany shots which took extra time though they were very professional and expertly taken. The major problem was we had no sound which would be very essential part of the final cut in order for our film openning to be a success.

Furthermore our main source to get to our audience was the use of Instagram which is a social network site that has a wide range of audiences but mostly is used by teenagers which was the perfect source for us to get feedback as well as inform them of our film progress and spread out the word of our film to have greater awareness amongst our audiences and go global. This shows that we are apealing to the desired audience and making positive progress.

Finally on the 25th of March on a Tuesday at 3pm I went to the cinema to watch my film opening with the rest of the audience and it was a huge success. When the film was put on big screen it came out perfectly and after the opening had finished we received a huge round of applause I was pretty sure we over achieved. Unfortunately I could not record or take any pictures for proof in case it caused disruption or went against the rules.

Evaluation Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

PRELIM

38. PRELIM - Meeka, Taisha, Liban from 283goswell on Vimeo.

The prelim pre production, production and and post production is not similar to our film opening as our knowledge, experience and skills were very basic and amateur. The prelim was rushed due to the limited small amount of time we had and he fact that we could not redo shots due to in experience and had sound missing which should have been inserted. Furthermore I think our use of Mise-en-scene was not professional and very amateur like as we could have chose a better location and better clothes and props. In addition this was our first ever group project so working together was a huge challenge as evryone had there own ideas and there was a lack of creativity and communication between us. In summary i belive the prelim was not very successful as time was being wasted and not utilised as wel took shots that were not correct e.g. match cuts that did not match and then just decided not to use them during editing. In the end it compares to a low budget film and certainly has the scope to be improved hugely as well as we did not have any production or distribution companies.

FILM OPENING

36. Shah Iqram, Liban Abdulahi, Olalade Arowolo, Ozge Ozberk from 283goswell on Vimeo.

I think overall our production was nearly perfect as it was very organised, professional, good team work and great creativity. I think we developed our skills to a large extent more than first anticipated as we had excellent use of camera shots and movement, mise-en-scene, editing and sound. We thrived under the project rules as we used free copy right music across different site sources as well as using different technologies in the process.  Furthermore for advertising and marketing we all played our part and used Instagram as our main social network which was a huge success and a big hit as we recived our desired audience and had a lot of followers checking up our progress as well as giving their oppinions and spreading the word. We put up Vlogs to show our rough cut and received a lot of vaulable feedback and both positive and negative oppinions which we had to work on. Finally at the end out film product was fully completed and was an absolute huge difference when compared back to the prlim which indicates how much progress we made, development in keys skills, improved creativity and finaly a huge successful end result.

Final Cut Evaluation

Overall I believe that my group has gone on from strength to strength since the beginning of this project in terms of knowledge of the subject, technological skills, working as a team collaboratively, task organisation, cooperation and professionalism. I think our group has been a huge success as we have gelled together positively and have done very well working together to get a completed and finalised opening of our teen film. In addition I think our final cut was an enormous success despite the fact that we had major editing and finishing off to do as well as manipulating all the good work from the rough cut to meet the targets and requirements of this project but at the same time keeping the professionalism and quality was unbelievably a huge risky achievement. I also learnt not to hugely underestimate time our project will take as you will have to take factors into account such as ability to have the knowledge to use the technology available to us to a great extent whether it is hardware or software, film planning schedule, succession of agreed individual tasks and other aspects of media.

Furthermore I also believe despite the numerous difficulties we had encountered whether it was technical or physical we used time very efficiently and took targets more seriously to make consistent progress in contrast to a very slow start at the beginning which my group should be very proud of. During this project personally I think I have developed my ability and skills to a far greater extent e.g. my editing enhanced towards perfection, camera shots and movement fell perfectly into place when creating the opening using final cut pro and team work and cooperation was key taking into consideration everyone’s views and ideas and then coming to a conclusion as well as making critical decisions. In summary I think we all are very proud of what has been achieved of our finalised project and ultimately the goal was to improve your knowledge of media itself, skills experienced from using technologies and producing a media product through the use of different platforms and actual steps/processes.

We also had a look at other films openings to see the title sequence and the order they had put it in. We used fast and furious' title sequence to take ideas.

Final Editing; Sound Cloud Collection

we found some free sound clips off youtube. we then used it for the geek scene. This is our proof of copyright free sound clips.

Final editing in process

Instagram Feedback!

We also received positive feedback on our instagram page which we were really impressed about to see that the hard work we had put in were having outcomes.

We also received some improvements that could be make on our rough cut which were roughly the same comments we received from our student feedback. We took these comments in to account and included these kind of sound affects in our final film.

Instagram Advertising

Using Instagram which is one of the latest social media networks we advertised the progress of our film and kept our followers updated in their interest of the film. We included our shot to shot list and rough cut to keep our followers interested in the film and to have their thoughts and ideas on things we could include.

Difficulties whilst editing

Difficulties whilst editing:

  • moving files- for example exporting from one software to another. ( usually the problem arised from final cut pro)
  • changing the lighting in the film- while filming the geek scene (played by shah) , the lighting changed quickly due to the sunlight.
  • clipping the right voice over for a particular character.
  • mouse was not wired correctly .this made it difficult to select clips
  • sound cloud on creative commons did not work on some macs
  • Final cut pro was very glitchy therefore needing to save our work every 15-20 minutes
  • Having to overwrite clips due to software not allowing to cut out desired part of the clip needed

Research of Music & Sound 2

To gain ideas about the intro of sounds on the opening scenes we had a look at a few videos. We were influenced by Breakfast Club's opening scene, the scene played music throughout the whole opening which looked professional and good.

There were also other movies that included music during their scene opening, for example Fast and Furious which always had some ongoing music in the background including effects such as changing the gear or the sound of the tyres screeching.

Research of Music & Sound

To find the appropriate sound to use during our film opening we had to do a lot of research. This research was done using Clip Grab, Sound Cloud. In total we have 9 sound clips used in our film which can be seen in the second picture this includes sound effects such as the ring tone for iPhone, the bell on the bus and etc. We used music during the joggers run to highlight the importance of music whilst doing sports.

Production and Distribution Company

To make this distribution company name we used the program 'Motion' as we thought this was the most appropriate one to use advised by our teachers. The reason why we chose to use firework is because stood out from crowd and was something memorable to stay in the audiences mind especially with the actual 'firework' exploding which had a really nice effect on the name.

The production company name we used was 'Stoned Productions' we used also used the program 'Motion' to create this name with different effects that could be made using this program.

Reflective Blog Post - Editing

Me and Liban shared the full responsibility of editing due to us being more used to the technical hardware and software. It was agreed that minimum two people shall edit to get the best out of editing due to one person will not only be reliable enough but cannot be very critical of his own work and will be tired and will need focus to get the editing done. Editing was very stressful and quite a big challenge with limited time and there could not any any complacency at this time or underestimation. Me and Liban worked very hard together and thrived as we both had disagreements and had to make crucial decisions as well and motivating each other and teaching each other a few skills and ideas to get the best possible out of editing.

Personally editing was a huge part where I had enhanced my skills and applied everything from ideas to key skills and professionalism. According to our final cut our editing was top draw and very professional which we expected and were very satisfied by the feedback as there was no negative or feedbacks suggesting improvement all but just praise and complements. I had thoroughly enjoyed editing with Liban and facing difficulties together as well as having very good cooperation and though process with each other, none the less was near perfection at the end.

The most challenging part of editing was when there were clips that we could not use and it was far too late to re-film but we exceptionally moved on from that and made it look like nothing was ever missing. Another struggle was the sound as we had to adjust both sound and natural clip sound to get the right effect as well as chopping copyright free clips to get a specific part of that sound clip. But overall everything was a success and dealt with professionally and the outcome was far greater than what we had first imagined.

I learnt that editing is one of the most important and vital stages in a film due to the way it communicates with the audience and lets them understand the right intention with ease without having to work out what is going on or losing their interest. Also how it makes filming seem way more interesting by having various different camera shots and sounds than just having one camera shot same all the way through.
