Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

During our teen film opening we spent a lot of time getting the angles right, getting the right shots and making sure everything was in the right place. This video was made using the program Camtasia to record a 'director's cut'. I went through the film with camtasia and talked about the used forms and conventions during our teen opening.

We also had stereotypes used in the film opening. We had three stereotypes of teens, the geek, glamorous girl and the jogger. We were influenced by 'The Breakfast Club' who had included different stereotypes of teenagers which were similar to our choice. Our setting took place around college and the college entrance and on public transport. These are very stereotypical teenage settings as aged 13-18 the most typical places to hang around would be in college, the reason why we included the college entrance was to show our audience how different their entrances was to be with totally opposite characteristics and personalities. Moreover as included in the Camtasia recording as a group using sound cloud we used different music that we thought identified each character and their mood. We used a hip hop and speedy music for the jogger that kept up with his pace of jogging to the college. We used an r&b music for the glamorous girl to show her cool ways and included a guy looking at her to actually show our audience how attractive she was to pull looks. We used a very jolly music for the geek presenting him doing work on the bus in the morning on his journey to college. The binary oppositions in our opening with our totally different characters could make our audience think this could cause conflicts, however as our teen film carries on our main idea was to show our audience how these totally different characters became best friends.

Our title sequence was planned and ordered before the final video was made on final cut pro. We blogged about the title sequence and actually used the title sequence order print on our classroom wall to gain idea. We firstly came up with something like this for the sequence and then improved on it:

Distribution Company - Fireworks Films
Production Company - Stoned Productions
Actor 1 - Shah Iqram
Actor 2 - Liban Abdulahi
Film Title - CANDI Club
Actor 3 - Ololade Arowolo

We also had a look at other films openings to see the title sequence and the order they had put it in. We used fast and furious' title sequence to take ideas.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation is the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way. The teen social groups that have been presented in our film opening were the geek first of all. The geek was presented in a way that would have been presented anywhere else. Whilst travelling to college the geek is on the bus trying to do work on his laptop, we also wanted to include a humorous part in this teen film opening and whilst his phone rings the teen checks every pocked and comes out with different gadgets. This was done to portray how the teen of our society now is very interested into technology and want the latest out of everything that comes out. The second character of our teen film was the glamorous girl walking down to college, we presented her as very mysterious first showing her shoes which were high heels, then lipstick with over the shoulder shot and finally a tilt show to show what she was wearing. We could see the glamorous girl showing care of how she looked whilst going to college, this was a presentation of most teenage girls even now including me caring about how we look. The last character was the jogger, the jogger was in tracksuits and sporty clothes fitting his stereotypical look and listening to music with his organised stop watch. The last teen social group we presented was all of them hugging, this would be a representation of all the kids with binary oppositions ending up being good friends no matter what.

I think these characters were presented in a positive aspect as no negativity was portrayed through these characters. Instead we portrayed different stereotypes with a positive friendship and outcome.

Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution  might distribute your media product and why?

Our distribution name was Fireworks films. To make this distribution company name we used the program 'Motion' as we thought this was the most appropriate one to use advised by our teachers. The reason why we chose to use firework is because stood out from crowd and was something memorable to stay in the audiences mind especially with the actual 'firework' exploding which had a really nice effect on the name.

The production company name we used was 'Stoned Productions' we used also used the program 'Motion' to create this name with different effects that could be made using this program.

These are big major companies that would have helped the audience of our film acknowledge, these big company name's would have distributed to our advertisement. Having a big company behind us would have a better effect that using smaller independent companies that maybe couldn't have advertised our film well enough to get the cinema stats we wanted.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the product audience for your media product?

The audience for teenage movies in general would be 13-18 year olds teen turning into the stage of young adults that might not want to let go of their teenage life and memories. However the wider audience of this film would be grown ups that are adults. The reason for this could be they would want to reminisce their college life and the different stereotypes that maybe could've even applied to them. The audience who are most likely to watch them however would be teenagers that relate to them right now during their college life and that would want to see a different aspect of themselves from the bigger screen. Another wide audience would be the young teenagers which were aged 13-16 waiting to go to college, wanting to see the college life, setting and friends before they even got there which was one of the main reasons why we included some of the filmings at the college entrance to express the stereotypical places to hang around in college.

To get through to our main audience which were teenagers around the age of 13-17 we used a social media network called 'Instagram' we made an account named 'Group36' and kept our followers on Instagram updated with what was going on with our film.We included our shot to shot list and rough cut to keep our followers interested in the film and to have their thoughts and ideas on things we could include.

We also received positive feedback on our instagram from the teenagers that we made the film for.

We also received some improvements that could be make on our rough cut which were roughly the same comments we received from our student feedback. We took these comments in to account and included these kind of sound affects in our final film for our audience to be happy.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

What appeals to our audience is the actors, storyline, genre, location, action and the sounds. I will discuss the mise en scene. Nearly everything in our film opening could relate to the target audience. The actors in our film were stereotypical teenagers that attended to college on a full time basis. This could have helped our target audience as they could relate to the actors themselves as they were going to be around the same age. The storyline was very interesting as it explained how the binary oppositions in the film ended up being very good friends this would send out a message to our audience that not everyone who acts or looks like you or someone you don't like can't be your friend. The message our film opening is giving out that you could be friends with anyone no matter what they act like or who they are. The genre of the film was humour, this humour genre could have been an escape from their stressful life full of exams and the pressure they recieved from education, it could have been a very laughable 2 hours of their life spared watching our movie. The location we used for our film opening actually varied we first used public transport which appealed to teenagers as this was an everyday part of our life, we used the road down college that everyone could have been familiar with. We also used the idea of a person coming out of their house just as everyone else does to attend to college. Another very typical location was infront of college which is an area for everyone to hang around and a location that everyone could relate to as it was very familiar. We used sounds in our film opening, we used a different sound for each character trying to portray their personality that maybe the audience could also relate to, we also used extra sounds we included in this film from sound cloud, for example iPhone ringtone that nearly every single one of our teenagers have now that hear it every second and our every day use of the bell of the bus.

This was my interview with a memeber of target audience aged 16 as they're talking about the latest show they've watched, how it appealed to them, how they heard it, where they saw it, the reactions and if they'd go to watch the film again and recommend it to any of their friends/

This was the the rough cut feedback we received from our teacher and the students in our class. Personally I think this has helped us a lot as an outsider they delivered their thoughts on us because as we produced the film we tended not to see our mistakes as we kept on watching it over again and I think it has always been better to make someone watch it and receive their thoughts about it since the students counted as a part of out audience and there couldn't be better feedback than that one.

The feedback we received was that some of our scenes were slow paced and some fast as well as too many extra shots taking more time. Another problem that was presented to us was the sound which we did not have any and will be crucial to the success of our opening scene.

We have reached our audience with one of the most important social networks: Instagram that I know for sure all teenagers have as a 17 year old. We always kept our followers updated on instagram and advertised our film on there.

we found some free sound clips off youtube. we then used it for the geek scene. This is our proof of copyright free sound clips.

Final editing in process

Instagram Feedback!

We also received positive feedback on our instagram page which we were really impressed about to see that the hard work we had put in were having outcomes.

We also received some improvements that could be make on our rough cut which were roughly the same comments we received from our student feedback. We took these comments in to account and included these kind of sound affects in our final film.

Instagram Advertising

Using Instagram which is one of the latest social media networks we advertised the progress of our film and kept our followers updated in their interest of the film. We included our shot to shot list and rough cut to keep our followers interested in the film and to have their thoughts and ideas on things we could include.

Difficulties whilst editing

Difficulties whilst editing:

  • moving files- for example exporting from one software to another. ( usually the problem arised from final cut pro)
  • changing the lighting in the film- while filming the geek scene (played by shah) , the lighting changed quickly due to the sunlight.
  • clipping the right voice over for a particular character.
  • mouse was not wired correctly .this made it difficult to select clips
  • sound cloud on creative commons did not work on some macs
  • Final cut pro was very glitchy therefore needing to save our work every 15-20 minutes
  • Having to overwrite clips due to software not allowing to cut out desired part of the clip needed

Research of Music & Sound 2

To gain ideas about the intro of sounds on the opening scenes we had a look at a few videos. We were influenced by Breakfast Club's opening scene, the scene played music throughout the whole opening which looked professional and good.

There were also other movies that included music during their scene opening, for example Fast and Furious which always had some ongoing music in the background including effects such as changing the gear or the sound of the tyres screeching.

Research of Music & Sound

To find the appropriate sound to use during our film opening we had to do a lot of research. This research was done using Clip Grab, Sound Cloud. In total we have 9 sound clips used in our film which can be seen in the second picture this includes sound effects such as the ring tone for iPhone, the bell on the bus and etc. We used music during the joggers run to highlight the importance of music whilst doing sports.

Production and Distribution Company

To make this distribution company name we used the program 'Motion' as we thought this was the most appropriate one to use advised by our teachers. The reason why we chose to use firework is because stood out from crowd and was something memorable to stay in the audiences mind especially with the actual 'firework' exploding which had a really nice effect on the name.

The production company name we used was 'Stoned Productions' we used also used the program 'Motion' to create this name with different effects that could be made using this program.

Rough Cut Check

Title Sequence Research

In order to make the title sequence I had to use ideas from somewhere else. For example the title sequence order in one of our classrooms was a great start.

We also researched teen movies and to see how they had done their title sequence to have some idea.

During this research we found that the production companys name came first and decided that maybe our 'Stoned productions' could also come first in our version.
