Stereotypes and Character representations

Stereotypes and Character representation:

Stereotypes are used to convey character representation in a manner that is easy for the audience to know. Stereotypes are usually an extreme exaggeration of characters and in no way are an accurate representation of characters.

One film that brilliantly highlights all the stereotypes usually found in teen films is 'not another teen movie'. It is a parody of the most popular teen films and highlights all the stereotypes usually found in teen films.

Here are some examples of stereotypes and character representation usually found in teen films:

  1. Popular Head Cheerleader :  This is the type of girl that is usually very self centred and egotistical. She is presented as the beautiful girl with excessive make up and a small clique of girls who are as shallow and stupid. Dates the captain of the football team and usually takes centre stage wherever she is.

The Jock: Captain of the football team, he is usually the strongest and funniest in his group of friends. Will usually have one best friend amongst his social group and dates the head cheerleader. Like to show off and be brash but are usually kind and humble when by themselves.
  3. The Geeks: Group of teenagers who don't fit in with anyone else but themselves. Very studious and organised and usually weeks ahead in all their classes. Lack social skill but try to make up for it by being funny. They usually fail and end up being teased. Their one wish is to be popular.
  4. The Virgin: Usually found amongst the geeks. Very weird and reprehensible and are obsessed with sex. Enamoured by the popular head cheerleader and will do anything to get her attention. Usually seen spying on girls in the toilets.
  5. The Black Guy:  There is always a stereotypical black guy. Usually seen when during situations of a comedic manner. Expressions are usually exaggerated and is well liked by everyone. Doesn't really have a crew but tends to drift in and out and be known by everyone.
