Analysis of First Experimental Storyboard

Before we carried out this task we all were given some tips on how to frame scenes as a practise for the real upcoming one.

Framing Tips:

  • Compose your shot carefully and plan your shots so that the action takes place within the frame. Take particular care with the background
  • Shoot your scene a number of times from different angles and vary your shot types
  • Have actor walk in and out of the frame, it helps with editing
  • There should be minimal camera movement so always use a tripod
  • Shoot plenty of cutaways, will help with editing
  • Film at eye level to your actor
  • Pan slowly in one direction only
  • Don't zoom
  • Carefully focus on your actor or subject
  • Continuity is vital if shooting on different days
  • Match cuts will make your film look more professional
  • Try use rule of thirds more often
  • Close ups are essential, as are medium close ups
  • There should be no space above the head

Critical analysis of produced storyboard from teacher and feedback:

We approached this task with caution as it was all based on perfection of using different camera shots for the right scenes to cause the desired effect/emotion/assumption etc. Carrying out this task strengthened our camera skills and pointed out weaknesses and improvements to be made as well as understanding what effect or emphasis it will have on the story/characters/scene instead of using one same angle throughout.

In our storyboard the shots we used or intended to try and use were:

  • Close up
  • Medium close up
  • Medium shot
  • Match cut
  • Long shot
  • Wide shot

We did have some positives from or storyboard but at the same times had a lot of negatives from camera shots to camera positioning and creativity. E.g. when the dead person was on the floor we should have taken an close up picture of his face from ground level instead of taking a medium close up from a point of view shot to make it more suitable and effective. We also had to improve taking camera shot as we tried to take medium shots it did not come out correct as well as taking wrong shots for different scenes such as when I am biting the tape we should have taken a close up from the side of my face or in front instaed of a medium shot and so on. However it was a successful task as it did take our group camera skills to a limit to suggest further improvement and though process is needed next time round.
